This idyllic bay was once home to a thriving tourist complex, boasting five luxury hotels, a vast campground, and a range of recreational facilities catering to the needs of the officers of the Yugoslav army and their families. It was not formally restricted for military purposes, but in reality, booking holidays here, being a civilian, was very difficult unless you had some connections. Surrounded by lush Mediterranean vegetation, the pristine white sand beach, and crystal-clear waters, Kupari was a perfect holiday destination.
A One-Day Trip from Dubrovnik to Kupari Hotels
If you’re staying in the city of Dubrovnik and want to explore the intriguing history of the Resort of Kupari, it’s easily accessible as a day trip. The complex is located just 10 kilometers south of Dubrovnik, making it a convenient destination for visitors.
To get there, in theory, you can take a public bus #10 from Dubrovnik in the direction of Cavtat. The Dubrovnik’s starting point is Gruž, next to the ferry terminal, and the bus drops you off in Kupari, within walking distance of the former hotels. But, apparently, the bus can be crowded and it’s not sure that you’ll be able to squeeze in.
A better idea (we opted for it) seems to be to rent a car or take a taxi / Uber, both of which will allow you more freedom and flexibility in exploring the area at your own pace. The estimated price of Uber ride (as of April 2023) is around 100 HRK = 12,95 EUR = 14,26 USD.
Alternatively, you can take a boat service from Dubrovnic to Srebreno and take a 12-15 minute walk to the complex, admiring the Adriatic coast on your way. For the timetable and prices, check here.

Kupari Beach Resort offers a unique opportunity for urban exploration for “urbex” enthusiasts. The abandoned hotels provide a haunting and atmospheric setting for those interested in exploring abandoned spaces and delving into the history of the Yugoslav Civil War.
Entering the hotels in 2018 was easy and we had no problems with exploring the inside of the hotels. However, we didn’t dare to climb higher floors of the hotels – it is doable, but if you intend to do so, be prepared and take for instance a flashlight.
However, if you are an experienced urban explorer, you might find the place not the most challenging and amusing, so don’t be disappointed.

We’ve heard about this plans already in 2018 and since then, nothing has changed.
